Mr Brendan Coleman is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and knee conditions. His practice focuses on helping patients reduce pain, restore function and return to the activities that are important to them.

Born and raised in Auckland, Brendan graduated from the University of Auckland Medical School before completing New Zealand’s orthopaedic training programme. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2006.

He then spent two years in subspecialty fellowship training in Australia and the United Kingdom. In Australia he completed the Melbourne Knee Fellowship and worked at the Perth Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre. In London he trained at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and the Hospital of St John and Elizabeth. The four posts between them covered the full range of what he treats now — sports injuries and ligament reconstruction at one end, complex arthritic joints and revision replacement at the other.

In 2014 he was awarded the prestigious ABC Travelling Fellowship, which took him through leading orthopaedic centres in the United States and Canada, including Harvard University, Hospital for Joint Disease and the Campbell Clinic.

Brendan has a particular interest in arthroscopic surgery, sports injuries, joint reconstruction and joint replacement of the shoulder and knee. He treats a wide range of conditions, from acute sporting and traumatic injuries through to degenerative joint problems.

Alongside his private practice, Brendan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Middlemore Hospital. He continues to contribute to the education and training of future orthopaedic surgeons through his involvement with the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association. He is a current examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Brendan sits on the board of the New Zealand Joint Registry, the national database that tracks the performance of every joint replacement implanted in New Zealand. He has previously served on the Scientific Committee of ISAKOS, the international society for arthroscopy, knee surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine.

Brendan believes that good orthopaedic care starts with listening to the patient and understanding how their condition affects their everyday life. He takes a personalised approach to treatment, discussing both surgical and non-surgical options and helping each patient make an informed decision about their care.

His goal is simple: to provide expert, evidence-based orthopaedic care that helps patients regain movement, reduce pain and get back to the life they enjoy.

He consults in Remuera, Botany and Warkworth, and operates at private hospitals across Auckland alongside his public appointment at Middlemore Hospital.
